(AP) -- Seven-hundred Wayne County workers face temporary layoffs this summer. County Executive Robert Ficano said Thursday he acted after talks with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union didn't yield concessions.

The workers include road crews, health workers, social workers, accountants and clerical staff. AFSCME earlier rejected a 10 percent pay cut taken by most other employees of Michigan's most populous county.

The county faces a $100 million deficit. The layoffs are set for June 30 through July 11 and Aug. 27 through Sept. 12.

Ficano says they were rescinded last month over hopes the concessions would be accepted. He says about 200 permanent layoffs will continue through September.
