The Flint Farmers' Market is known for its Michigan-grown foods and other plants.
Meteorologist Kevin Usealman took a stroll around the market and got a random sampling of some of the more unique items in our Made and Michigan series.
The Flint Farmers' Market is a place you can always find fresh homegrown produce, beautiful flowers and other things for your garden and even some of the organic herbs and products that come from them. Even some things you might not expect.
"There is such a variety in native plants and they are so exotic," said Rebecca Gale-Gonzales. "They look like they are from the tropics some of them.
"We have flowering shrubs, the elderberry shrub feeds birds and you can eat it, too," Gale-Gonzales said. "So thats nice."
"Maria really prides herself in having the most unique stuff here," Emma Lazar said. "She has helitrope here, which is a really nice vanilla smelling flower; Coleus, which is non-flowering. There are celosia, this is silver mountain -- one of my favorite to touch and feel."
"Most of the food is produced by small farmers," said Maria Carlin. "Places like the farmers' market are where you get the freshest pick, best quality and good prices, too."
"Michigan strawberries have an excellent flavor," said Shawn Diemer or Diemer's Winter Gardens. "Whereas you get the Florida ones, they are hollow and white inside. They just don't have the flavor of a good, juicy Michigan strawberry."
"The organic herbs I grow, I use in the soaps," said Paul Wideman of Mirror Lake Organics. "Chamomile, that makes you kinda sleepy, is a fantastic herb for soaps. It soothes and gets rid of the bags under your eyes.
"I'll make a tea out of the marigold flower petals and put those in the soap," Wideman said. "It's fantastic. It's great for your face and soothes your eyes. We have a lot of people here that work hard to produce and bring their products, their plants and craft.
The Flint Farmers' Market is more than 100 years old, and in 2009 won the title of "Most Loved Market" in the nation on Facebook.
