(AP) -- DETROIT - Federal officials are planning an environmental impact study ahead of a light-rail system stretching north along Woodward Avenue from downtown Detroit to Eight Mile Road.
The study and anticipated construction date of the $450 million to $500 million project were announced Monday.
The Detroit News reports work on the Woodward Light Rail is expected to start next year. The study will take a year to 18 months to complete and is needed if federal matching funds are used.
About $125 million in private and public funds have been raised for the 3.4-mile first phase from downtown to West Grand Boulevard.
Phase two would be completed by 2016 and link Grand Boulevard to Eight Mile.
