(AP) -- A state prison that closed last year may end up housing federal inmates. A delegation from the Federal Bureau of Prisons inspected the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility on Tuesday. The prison was considered for housing terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but another was chosen. The Standish prison was shuttered Oct. 31 because of budget cuts.

The federal group toured the grounds and met with local business and community leaders. U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak tells radio station WSGW the visitors liked what they saw.

State Corrections Director Patricia Caruso tells the Detroit Free Press if federal officials want to buy the prison, the next step will be an environmental assessment of the property.
