NBC25 was at the Sanilac County Fairgrounds on Wednesday for Project RED.

It stands for Rural Education Day.

It's a service of the Michigan Farm Bureau, a proud sponsor of the NBC25 Weather Garden.

Fourth graders from across Sanilac County attend 13 workshops from dairy production, to Christmas tree farming, to chemical safety.

Volunteers say it's a way of keeping the agriculture culture alive.

Shelly Warczinsky, promotional education chair, says "We are dedicated to educating these kids about agriculture. We really want to keep this industry thriving, and we got to teach these kids about agriculture and they're in the heart of it. Sometimes they still don't know where milk comes from. So we really need to get that word out there."

Five counties in the Thumb participate in Project RED.

The saginaw valley also has a similar program.
