BURTON -- Alana Goeringer, NBC25 Intern.

A Burton man faces charges for embezzling money from his 90-year-old grandfather.

Michael Miller is accused of spending $447,000 of his grandfather, Spencer Shumway’s, money. Miller became his grandfather’s power of attorney in 2007.

Police say Miller used his grandfather’s money to flip houses in Kokomo, Indiana, as well as to purchase 10 to 15 expensive vehicles.

"When you're dealing with anybody's money, check on it. Just because someone has power of attorney, the court's not saying that these people are capable and know what they're doing,” said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

Miller moved his family from Arkansas into Shumway’s home, then moved the elderly man into McLaren Homewood Village in Flint. After acquiring a $36,000 balance at the nursing home, Miller moved Shumway to Crestwood Nursing Center in Fenton.

Police say from 2007 to 2008, Shumway’s bank account went from $447,000 to $2.30.

“Make sure that the people or the person that’s caring for your vulnerable adult, who’s looking after their money, is making an accounting of it and it’s all being done properly,” said Pickell.

Shumway died at Crestwood Nursing Center in August.

Miller faces a 20 year felony if convicted of embezzlement charges.
