HAMPTON TOWNSHIP -- Several fake phone calls swindled an elderly Hampton Township woman out of nearly $11,000 in one of the latest phone scams sweeping the nation.
The woman received a call from someone pretending to be her granddaughter. The alleged imposter told the woman she was in Spain and had just been arrested for speeding. Police tell NBC25 the “granddaughter” said she and at least one other person needed money for bond and attorney fees, after drugs were supposedly found in the vehicle as well
“When the individual called they asked the lady “Grandma do you know who this is?” (She) just thought it sounded like her granddaughter so she gave her the name,” said Hampton Township Police Chief Gerald Runde.
The woman wired $10,900 via Western Union and suspected nothing, until a bit later.
“She waited a couple more days before she decided to investigate and see if her granddaughter made it back to the states and that’s when she found out that this was a hoax,” Runde said.
The $10,900 is topped with another $1,000 in transaction fees. Police say recovering the money is unlikely; at least without the help of the FBI and Secret Service. Police are working to find the suspects. Meanwhile the chief warns the public to be careful of whom they talk to and give information to over the phone.
