The Huron County Sheriff says the Humane Society has offered a $2,500 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the person who poisoned seven German shepherds at a home in Colfax Township.

“The dogs are part of the family,” says owner Rachael Matson.  “They’re my children’s pets.”

She found out about the horrible act on Friday.  Her daughter called her and told her seven of their German shepherds appeared sick.  She called a vet and rushed home.

"It was either let them suffer until they die, or put them to sleep,” Matson says the vet told her. “It wasn't a real choice."

She chose to have the vet euthanize four puppies and three adult dogs named Snowflake, Lexie and Gretchen.

As for how the dogs became sick, Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson says someone entered an unlocked kennel on Friday and put antifreeze in the dogs' water.  He’s asking the public for help as his office searches for the person responsible.

Matson says her family will not rest easy until the dog killer is arrested.

“My 8-year-old doesn’t really understand.  She was practicing her kung fu, saying she wouldn’t let them hurt her other dogs if they came back.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Huron County Sheriff at (989) 269-6500.
