Investigators allowed NBC25 to follow along as they searched for non-compliant offenders
Michigan State Police this week began a state-wide sweep aimed at tracking down sex offenders who didn’t verify their addresses with local police agencies as the law requires.
Investigators at the Bridgeport Post allowed NBC25 to follow along as they carried out part of the sweep Tuesday. They say most sex offenders are in compliance with the law, but dozens in the Saginaw area are not. This sweep will work to find out why.
The reasons vary. Often an offender is sick, has died, or is incarcerated and unable to check in.
All convicted sex offenders must verify their addresses four times a year and within ten days of moving. This so police can keep track of offenders and keep the state's sex offender registry up-to-date. The deadline for verifying one’s address for the fourth quarter was last Friday.
