FLINT -- What once was a school for nearly 40 years will now be turned into a community outreach center.
As NBC25 found out, it will offer dozens of free resources to those in need.
The boards will soon come off the windows at St. Michael School in Flint.
"The legacy will live on," said Vicky Schultz, the CEO Catholic Charities of Shiawassee & Genesee Counties
The vacant building is being turned into what Catholic Charities calls a recovery super center.
"I mean all the kinds of services we dreamed of will come together under one roof and one location, and people won't have to go all over town trying to figure out how do I get this, where do I get that," said Schultz.
Right now the first floor is being used as an outreach center, where anyone can come for free household items.
Laquenla Avery says she's unemployed and comes here to find clothes for her one year old daughter.
"I don't have money like that to go out to the stores like I usually do, so after I had a baby, I had to cut all that out and spend my money on her," said Flint resident Laquenla Avery.
In a few months the Genesee County Community Mental Health Center will move to the top floor offering counseling services.
Resource Genesee will take over the second floor helping people find housing, and on the first floor…
"They could play cards; go to the gym to have recreational activities," said Schultz.
The school's cafeteria will also be renovated into a soup kitchen, and the locker rooms community showers and a place to do laundry.
One thing that won't change is the historic uniqueness of the building, for instance Catholic Charities wants to keep the oak wood work and the chalk boards in order to keep it looking like a school.
"We want to restore the integrity of the building, there is some great wood work, there is just some great memories here,” said Schultz.
This building may be more than 100 years old, but it will continue to bring a new life of service to the community.
Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties is looking for five million dollars in funding.
Renovations at St. Michael are expected to begin the beginning of next year.
