Public employees upset about working Wednesday

Most schools and businesses were in some way affected because of the weather, but some public offices were open making the employees really upset.

NBC25 received an e-mail from a Genesee County Friend of the Court employee that slams Genesee County Commissioners for opening the offices Wednesday.

It says, "I would be interested to know why they chose to endanger us…The employees here are livid over this!"

However, commissioners say they didn't endanger anyone.

"If they didn't come, that was okay. We didn't want anyone to do anything they didn't feel safe to do," says Genesee County Chairperson Jamie Curtis.

NBC25 saw certain Genesee County departments closed because some chose not to come in.

The commissioners are taking a lot of flack because they kept the offices open, but they say it's ultimately the decision of the employees.

The commissioners say employees could use their vacation or personal time, but if they didn't have the time they would not be paid.

The commissioners say there's no money to pay people for not working or give them another day off.

"If you have a business to run, you got to make sure it's going to function," says Ted Henry, another Genesee County Commissioner.

Commissioners we spoke with say they were at work at 5:30am Wednesday, but that they used only two wheel drive in their trucks to gauge the road conditions.

"We don't have people do things that we don't do ourselves. We try to be fair about it," says Curtis.

The commissioners say they work for the taxpayers and that taxpayers expect them to work.

NBC25 tried to speak with employees, but they said they could not comment on camera.

Attempts to talk to union representatives were unsuccessful because they were not in.

The City of Flint offices were not open to the public.

However, some workers did report.

The Genesee County Sheriff and some of his staff worked Wednesday as well.
