February is American Heart Month. The American Heart Association is urging Americans to join the battle against heart disease. February 4th, is National Wear Red Day. The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign and message that heart disease is not only a man's problem.
Many people, especially women are unaware that heart disease is the number one killer of women age 20 and over, killing approximately one woman every minute. More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
Stacy Sawyer with the American Heart Association says by wearing red we are spreading a very important message.
"We all need to be aware that there are many things we can do to prevent heart disease," Sawyer said. "So if we are wearing red in the office, at school or out and about then we are all coming together to help fight back against heart disease."
The American Heart Association is searching for local women who can help inspire other women to take their heart health to heart. They're looking for real women to "star" in local and national marketing and promotional campaigns.
Stop by Genesee Valley Mall on Saturday, February 5 to share your story in a short videotaped interview. You can share how you've been affected by heart disease and how you have made it your mission to fight heart disease.
You'll want to wear red to show your support for the Go Red For Women movement.
