SAGINAW -- With the blizzard named snowpalooza and the arctic air, road crews having been throwing alot of salt
down.  Wacky Winter Weather Week continues with Swan Valley Schools explaining why salt works its magic.  Swan Valley Schools says," Welcome to school science.  We are students from Swan Valley School District.  We are
going to put snow in these beakers and salt in one and see what happens.  Today we are going to investigate if salt
melts snow or ice.  The salt structure is holding below zero degrees celcius.  Ice and frost are forming on the outside of the glass.
The salt mixture drops the temperature because the chemical reaction causes the salt and water mixture to decrease
in temperature causing its freezing point to be lowered.  This reaction prevents ice crystals from forming.
Yes, salt does melt snow and ice.
Tomorrow is our last night of Wacky Winter Weather Week.  We get to find out if running from your car to the house really helps keep you from
getting more snow on you.
