The Groundhog has spoken… sort of, and if you haven’t noticed, warmer weather is on the way.  Start taking care of your home early to ensure you are able to have plenty of time for outdoor fun.  Here are some easy homeowner tips for preparing for spring that even the not so handy homeowner can handle.
Start on the exterior of the house. Use binoculars and scan the roof for any missing or damaged shingles, paying special attention around chimneys and vents.  Inspect gutters and downspouts to see that they haven't pulled loose and that they aren't clogged. Make sure downspouts are extended away from the foundation.
The winter weather is rough on the exterior siding and roof of your home.  Spring is a good time to inspect the wood components especially the siding for wood rot and damage. Pay special attention to areas where paint is missing or chipping away, and where caulking is missing or damaged. These are especially susceptible to rot. Generally it is better to catch rot and repair it when the damage is small, since it will only get worse each time it rains.
Check the dirt grading around the foundation. The dirt should slope away from the foundation at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet. If water pools at the base of a wall, you don't have adequate drainage. Proper grading always sheds water away from the foundation of the house to prevent damage from moisture.
Get a clear view of what’s outside. Clean your windows, both inside and out. While you’re at it, check for any cracked or damaged window glazing and panes along with seeing how well your weatherstripping held up over the winter. Replace worn weatherstripping and you’ll keep the cool air in and the warm air out come summer!
If your home has an attic fan, turn it on to be sure it is working before the 90 degree weather hits! Homes with crawlspaces should be sure the vents are open and free of debris to help airflow and reduce moisture under your home. Inside your home, clean HVAC vents and change the filter. Also, now is also a good time to be sure the AC works before the heat and humidity arrive.
Reconnect your hoses and check for leaks. To ensure you have the water to fill that kiddie pool and wash your car. Also, before your first backyard BBQ or party, check your outside electrical outlets to ensure the radio will play and that bug zapper keeps the mosquitoes off your guests!
Don’t wait until something breaks to find someone to repair your home. It is a good idea to have the names and contact information for qualified service professionals like the experts at Goyette Mechanical that are in your area.
