BAY CO. -- The Bay County Prosecutor says he’s kept a man convicted of “one of the worst child sex abuse cases in Bay County history” from being released from jail.
On June 6, 1981, George Garza Torres was sentenced to 56 to 80 years in prison for forcing children to engage in sexual acts with each other, with him and with his wife.
He was sent to the Cooper Street Correctional Facility in Jackson, Michigan where he has been since serving his sentence.
However, recently the Bay County Prosecutor’s Office received a notice that the Michigan Parole Board was going to grant parole to Torres, and release the convicted child molester from prison on May 17, 2010.
Prosecutor Kurt Asbury and his team say they appealed the decision, bringing evidence to Judge Joseph K. Sheeran that Torres was “still a menace to society.”
On March 4, 2011, Judge Sheeran ruled in favor of the prosecutor, and ordered Torres to remain locked up.
In a written statement, Prosecutor Asbury says, “I’m very pleased with the Court’s ruling today, if ever there was an individual who should never be allowed to set foot outside a prison, it’s Mr. Torres.”
