LAPEER -- Update March 28th, 3:50PM

More than 6,000 local students had an unexpected day off because of someone else's poor decision.

Someone let the air out of the tires on two-thirds of the Lapeer Community Schools' buses.

It's a costly decision that the district and local police are taking seriously.

Sometime Sunday night, someone got into the Lapeer Community Schools' transportation parking lot and let the air out of the front tires of dozens of buses.

"Fifty-three buses, basically 106 tires have to be re-inflated," says Gail Finley, Lapeer Community Schools transportation director.

"About 5:40 this morning, one of our drivers came out to begin her safety check like she does every morning and she wondered why her bus was listing a little bit."

Because of the disruption, school officials closed down the district, called police, and are now looking into who is responsible.

"They'll be looking to YouTubeFacebook, listening in on conversations at the highschool level and so on."

The area is fenced in, the gate was closed and locked, but that did not keep those responsible out.

"At first, district officials thought the tires were slashed, but upon further investigation, they found out the valve stems were just loosened, which is a good thing because the tires won't have to be replaced.

The charges will still be stiff for whoever did it. Lapeer Police tell NBC25 the charges will likely be malicious destruction of property, which is a felony, and trespassing.

Anyway you look at it, the actions of a few had drastic effects for the whole.

"It's very unfortunate that we've already used up all of our snow days, so this day will have to be made up at the end of the school year."

The transportation department says it will likely review its security plan to see if more measures are necessary.

Nearly all of the buses' tires were re-inflated by noon.

The school plans on reopening Tuesday.

NBC25 has spoken with staff from the Lapeer School District. They say the air was let out of the tires. Fortunately, no damage was done.  We are at the scene now and will have more information on this story as it develops.

Update: March 28th, 9:00 a.m.

The Associated Press is reporting that air was let out of the tires of 50 school busses Sunday night.  Staff is working to refill the air on the tires.  School will be back in session on Tuesday.

Students in the Lapeer area are getting a day off, but it comes at a costly price.

Vandals ransacked school busses at Lapeer Community Schools this weekend.  Tires were slashed, and enough damage was done, that the district decided to call off classes Monday. The school closing was posted on the NBC25 school closing list early Monday morning.

There’s no word yet on who is responsible for the crime.

A similar incident happened in Freeland Schools in July last year.  The parents of those students turned their children in to police.  The case went before the prosecutor to determine punishment.

Punishment in the Lapeer case will be determined once the culprits are caught.   What do you think the punishment should be? Leave us your comments below.
