Japan earthquake affects local Toyota dealerships

The impact of the Japan earthquake causes shortages in U.S. Toyota dealerships.

Not only is there a supply issue, when the price for a gallon of gas gets near the $4.00 mark people start looking for more fuel efficient vehicles and some of them are hard to come by.

This past week, officials at Grand Blanc Motorcars had 20 Toyota Priuses on the lot.

They're gone.

Friday, one was being test-driven and another still on order.

The reason?

Consumers want fuel-efficient vehicles.

Add to that the impact of the earthquake and supplies could be even smaller.

David Isbell, owner of Grand Blanc Motorcars says, "We probably won't have a real shortage until more like June or July."

The Scion and Yaris brands come out of northern Japan, near the earthquake.

However, the other brands come out of the middle section of the country or here.

"Most people don't know it, but about 90% of all of our cars are built right here in the U.S.," says Isbell.

For three weeks plants were shut down, but they're back up now.

Toyota officials say they have many other hybrids and non-hybrid vehicles to serve customers in the meantime.

Friday, Toyota announced its North American vehicle plants will operate on a reduced schedule over the next few weeks.

Most of the company's North American engine and component plants will follow the same schedule.
