MID-MICHIGAN -- Update: NBC25's Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa and Meteorologist Janet Van De Winkle are heading out across Mid-Michigan to cover any storm developments. We'll have the latest details on NBC25 News at 6:00 p.m. (If you are still having difficulty seeing NBC25 on channel 25, you can find us on46.1 or 30.3). We will also have the latest updates on the weather page here on connectmidmichigan.com.

Sunshine for much of today along with hot and humid weather will provide the fuel for a fairly strong cold front this evening to produce severe storms.  The NBC 25 Weather Team is monitoring the situation and preparing teams of storm spotters as well as in studio coverage should the damage end up being widespread.  Around 2pm a fast moving line of thunderstorms will begin racing across the lower peninsula and move in to areas like Clare and Mio around 4pm, The Tri-Cities around 6 pm, Flint around 7pm and areas east into the thumb between 7 and pm.  Along the line itself exists the widespread potential for winds in excess of 70 MPH, large hail, heavy rain and dangerous lightning.  Ahead of the line some individual cells are expected to form.  Any of these storms could also be severe and an isolated tornado, while not the main threat, is not out of the question.  So you could see one, maybe two quick strong to severe storms tonight.  Watch the NBC 25 weather page for updates and you can get the latest warnings national weather service warnings by clicking on Michigan here.

damaging winds

(The main threat from these storms is damaging winds, with this map showing a 45% probability of damaging winds within 25 miles of a point for the area in light purple.  Large hail is also possible and while not the primary threat, an isolated tornado can't be ruled out tonight - Map from NOAA Storm Prediction Center)

Also a Heat Advisory is posted for today, as temperatures are expected to climb to the lower 90s, with heat indices in the upper 90s.  People who are prone to heat stress, the elderly or the very young and anyone in a weakened state should be especially careful.  Drink plenty of water if you need to work outside and take plenty of breaks.  Listen to your body and don't overexert.

This all comes at a time when the area is still recovering from Sunday's storms, and even some power outages remain.  Tune in to NBC 25 today for the latest on the heat and possible severe weather.
