HURON CO. -- Parents of a 13-year-old girl who gave birth to a stillborn baby in an attic have lost parental custody of the teen.
The Associated Press reports the mother and father agreed to terminate parental rights Tuesday.
In March, NBC25 reported that the teenage girl went to hospital for treatment, and there it was discovered she had given birth to a child. The Huron County Sheriff's Department soon found the infant’s body in an attic at a home in Port Hope.
Further investigation led officials to arrest a 16-year-old boy, and charge him with criminal sexual conduct. The boy is a relative of the 13-year-old girl, though officials are not releasing how exactly they are related.
In April, the Department of Human Services showed up to the home where both the teen mother and teen father lived. After looking at the filth in the home, they ruled the home “unfit for living.” The family was forced to move out, and at that point the Huron County Prosecutor asked that the parents lose custody of both teens.
Tuesday, the parents agreed to the terms and have lost custody to both the 13-year-old girl who gave birth, and the 16-year-old boy charged with criminal sexual conduct.
The alleged CSC suspect remains in detention while the case goes through the court system.
