Tuesday 7:45 p.m.
A wildfire has consumed more than 1,800 acres in Northern Michigan.
According to our sister station TV 7 & 4 in Traverse City, the fire started around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Pictures were taken by residents living west of Grayling and north of M-72 near Howes Lake in Crawford County.
The DNR reports the fire is contained west of Manistee River Road.
“The fire is about at 1,800 acres now, and it’s being held. It’s growing a little bit, but they got crews at pretty much every corner, so it’s being attacked at each flank,” said Steven Eisele, a Public Information Officer with the Department of Natural Resources.
Fire officials are still monitoring the situation and will be on scene throughout the night.
At least 100 homes have been evacuated.
Right now the Manistee River Road area is under evacuation and there are several nearby roads closed.
The structures that have burned are not believed to have been homes.
The wind is expected to shift tonight and fire crews say that will help keep the fire contained.
The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at Resurrection Life Fellowship located two miles east of Grayling.
"What I’ve seen so far and I’m on the incident command post, they’re on it, they're making plans, they've got things in order, I’m very impressed, I think everyone is safe at this point," said Theresa Zambeck, with the American Red Cross.
