BAY COUNTY -- Deputies believe a man may have been intoxicated when he drove his car onto tracks in Bay County and was hit by an oncoming train.

The Sheriff’s Department reports the lights were flashing, but Darren Eugene Rood failed to stop at the railroad tracks on Garfield Road just north of Midland Road around 2:00 a.m. Friday.

He was rushed to MidMichigan Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Fortunately, he was wearing his seat belt. Officials report this helped reduce the injuries. He is in fair condition.

Roads in the area were closed down Friday morning as authorities investigated and cleaned up the debris.

Officials believe alcohol is a factor in the crash.
