LANSING -- Michigan teenagers may find it extremely difficult this summer to find a job, as the state’s unemployed adults move into minimum wage employment.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget says they expect about 83,900 teens will be unemployed this summer break. While that number may be shockingly high, it’s actually down from last year. The State reports in 2010 100,600 teens went from June to August without finding a job.

In total, 274,100 adolescents will be hunting for jobs to fill their school break this year.

However, the state’s sky-rocket high unemployment number is causing what used to be “teen jobs” to be filled by the unemployed adults, searching desperately for an income. “Securing a summer job is often a challenge for many teens, even in the best of labor market conditions,” said Rick Waclawek, director of the Department of Technology, Management & Budget’s Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.  “This year, teens will likely face increased competition from adults for available jobs...”

The State of Michigan has offered some advice for teens who are hoping to find a way to bring in the extra cash this season:
