Saginaw’s city records are in “some jeopardy” after rains and a leaking roof cause flooding at City Hall.
The City Manager’s office reports staff were greeted with “standing water, soaked carpets, crumbling plaster, and dripping light fixtures” in the building’s basement Monday morning. One of the impacted rooms is used to store records.
In a press release, Darnell Earley, the city manager states, “[c]ity officials fear that any further weather related events, such as the above-average rainfall experienced this year, will further compromise the integrity of the structure of this aged building.”
“Anytime you have standing water and moisture in the same location that you keep employment and medical records, you are in serious trouble,” Dennis Jordan, Director of Employee Services states in the press release. “Unfortunately, we are running out of dry space to store these vital records.”
The city is now asking for residents to consider a $7 million restoration millage. This renovation would include a new roof for City Hall, as well as other maintenance updates to the building.
“The problems are only going to get worse because of the age of the building. It should be obvous to everyone that City Hall’s useful life span has been reached and the building is in need of renovation, restoration, and preservation,” Earley states.
