A new report says Michigan’s welfare department spent millions of taxpayer dollars to buy cars and gift cards for welfare recipients.
The Associated Press reports the Michigan Department of Human Services’ automated accounting system found that employees were approving tax payer funds to sell bulks of gift cards and even cars that had been bought by the employees.
The Detroit News reports that the same state employee who often took the welfare request would also be the one responsible for creating the invoice and even writing the check. Thus, the millions of dollars in questionable purchases often went unnoticed.
The AP reports the welfare department also gave reimbursement money to welfare recipients for computers and electronics without ever documenting those transactions.
