(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder's plans to expand educational choice in Michigan are opposed in some communities worried about losing local control over their school districts.

Proposals likely to be introduced in the Legislature next month include a requirement for all public school districts to participate in the state's now-voluntary schools of choice program.

Districts would be required to allow nonresidents to apply for admission if they still have room after enrolling all of their in-district students.

Supporters say a mandatory choice program would be another tool to help families living in poor-performing school districts find better academic options.

Critics say the plan would undermine Michigan's tradition of local control over community school districts.

About 18 percent of Michigan districts currently don't participate in the program.
