FLINT -- Your prescription drugs may be coming from a middle man, according to the American Hospital Association.
Increasing drug shortages are causing over 50% of American hospitals to get their drugs from a middle man, or "grey market" supplier. This may sound alarming but an area physician tells NBC25 there is no difference in the medicine you get.
"We're hearing about it more because there is a lot more shortages of medications, and that is an issue that has expanded in the last decade. I think it like four times the amount of drug shortages are reported now, and that varies from, there is no longer a profit in it for companies to make things that have gone generic, so they stop making it. There used to be one company that did it. So when they stop no one is there to pick up the slack, yet the medication still has use," Dr. Bobby Mukkamala said.
Dr. Bobby says while not unsafe, the shortages do lead to increased prescription drug costs.
