Day Care could cost parents as much or more than College Tuition.
A new report released from the National Association of Child Care Resource Referral Agencies (NACCRRA)says in 36 states, “the average annual cost for center-based care for an infant was higher than last year’s tuition and related fees at a four-year public college.”
The NACCRRA says its vital for small children to have proper childcare, but at these sky-rocketing rates, most parents can’t afford to place their child in decent care.
The NCCRRA has made several recommendations to Congress on what should be done to change these increasing rates. You can find their full article by clicking here.
And it doesn't stop there. The California legislature is considering a bill that could mean drastic changes for nannies. The bill could make them eligible for lunch breaks, minimum wage, worker's compensation, paid vacation, and overtime pay.
The propsed "babysitting bill" would require household employers to pay minimum wage, except to minors or family members. Caregivers would also be entitled to rest breaks every two hours and a lunch break. that means an additional babysitter would need to be hired to relieve the nanny. They would also get overtime pay. and if they didn't get it, they could sue their employer.
We want to know if you think childcare rates are too high, and if you think the proposed "babysitting bill" is going too far. Leave us your comments here or on the NBC25 Facebook page.
