General Motors announced Wednesday they're bringing an all-electric car to the U.S.
GM officials say they are producing an electric version of the Chevy Spark minicar.
Spark EV is a small, battery-powered vehicle designed specifically for urban areas.
General Motors executives are predicting the compact Spark EV will appeal to commuters who drive every day 40 miles or less.
The electric vehicle will be sold globally, including some U.S. states, and produced in low volumes of 2000 per year.
Chevy is hoping the Spark will ignite new sales at a time when it's first semi-electric Volt has yet to take off. Fewer than 4000 have sold this year, and likely won't make its goal of selling 10,000 by the end of the year. Chevy is also trailing the Nissan Leaf in sales.
GM's gasoline powered Spark is already sold in overseas markets and will also be sold in the U.S. beginning in 2012.
Spark EV will be sold beginning in 2013.
