Michigan lawmakers no longer have lifetime health care benefits.

Governor Rick Snyder signed the legislation Tuesday that ends retiree health care benefits for 97 current and all future lawmakers.  Gov. Snyder says the ruling is “long overdue.”

“This is an exceedingly generous benefit that is clearly out-of-step with the private sector,” Snyder said.  “I want to thank both Republican and Democrat lawmakers for acting where previous Legislatures failed to eliminate this costly benefit.”

The governor’s office reports that before this law was passed, lawmakers who served at least six years were eligible to receive retirement health care benefits starting at 55-years-old.

“Over time, this solution will eliminate a costly long-term liability to the state,” Snyder said.
