Students at Arthur Hill high school can now get medical treatment without leaving school.
That's because a new health center just opened up in their building. Arthur hill is home to 1125 students. On any day more than a handful aren't feeling well and miss class.
Health provider Angela Williams says, "Kids come in with stomach aches, headaches in the mornings usually attributed to not eating breakfast."
Whatever the reason students will have less of an excuse to miss class. This 1700 square foot health center is now open for business. This is the second clinic to open in Saginaw public schools. There's also one at Saginaw high school. Each are staffed with licensed clinicians.
Williams continues, "If a child is sick while they're in school they don't have to be excused to go home."
They can be diagnosed and treated right here on campus. But, the clinic is not just open to students. Anyone in Saginaw county between the ages of 10 and 21 can be seen here. A facility of this type takes on new meaning as more and more families find themselves without healthcare coverage.
Principal Nathaniel McClain says, "With these families severing employment that usually means a lack of healthcare so any attempt on our behalf to secure healthcare for our students is essential."
The health center operates on a confidential basis and health care providers are able to help students with contemporary issues about dating violence, tattoos, and handling stress. Nurses say students are not required to have insurance either.
