Warm weather allowing birds to continue feeding of fish in Saginaw River

SAGINAW -- Outside of Saginaw City Hall, the number one problem is 'number two.'

Herring Gulls feasting on fish in the still unfrozen Saginaw River are causing quite a stink, pelting parts of the downtown area with large quantities of droppings.

A Saginaw city official tells NBC25 people have begun carrying umbrellas to protect themselves from getting hit.

Unusually high temperatures have allowed the gulls to continue eating fish from the river, instead of farther out on the Saginaw Bay.

"I don't know what they can do about it, not much you can do about it, just something you have to put up with," says Saginaw resident Carlos Hernandez.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the birds will stay in the area as long as the river remains unfrozen.
