Warm weather keeps winter blues at bay

MIDLAND -- Warmer-than-usual temperatures seem to be keeping the winter blues at bay. Midland residents were outdoors Friday walking their dogs and biking at the park - not your typical winter activities. And traces of melting snow on green lawns leave us wondering, “Where’s winter?”
A sign in front of Midland Free Methodist church reads, “Winter?!”
"That was probably what was on Pastor Dave's mind,” said church member Kevin Crampton. “Probably just thought that would be a funny thing to put on the sign today."
The mild - downright warm - weather was on everyone's minds.
Laurie Kowalak wasn’t bundled up when she came to walk her dogs at City Forest. “Don’t need to be,” she said.
Kim White and her friend Pam Singer decided to take a leisurely stroll through Emerson Park. “This morning we decided that we needed to get outside 'cause it was so great. She texted me, I texted her back, and said let's meet and walk down to town."
The balmy, 50-degree January day seemed more suitable for playing street hockey on the dry, outdoor ice-skating rink at Emerson. With above-freezing temperatures, it's been out of commission all season, leaving just the concrete beneath.
Snow-lovers might have had more luck across town, at City Forest, where crews will make snow for the sled hill. But it seemed the lack of the real stuff Friday made prospective sledders opt for less extreme outdoor fun.
"We walked through the trails, and just enjoyed being outside, getting some fresh air and sun,” Kowalak said.
“We have one all set up in the backyard and no ice. We're looking at it everyday, waiting for the snow to come,” said Singer, who’s been itching to lace up her skates at her backyard rink. But it seems she’ll be sitting on the sidelines.
