A Flint area student who's gained national attention for his Locks of Love campaign remained suspended from school Wednesday night.

At a press conference, the Madison Academy school board told 17-year-old J.T. Gaskins he could return to school tomorrow, if he trimmed his hair or re-styled it to the dress code's standards.

J.T. was suspended last month after school officials said his long hair violated the student handbook.  Board President Nick Mihailoff said although Locks of Love is a worthy cause, the school stands by its student handbook that everyone signed over the summer. The handbook states that for boys "Hair must be clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes."

He offered to sponsor a Locks of Love event in J.T.'s name, if J.T. agreed to trim his hair.  As far as changing the school's code to allow boys to grow out their hair, the school is standing firm on its decision.

"I'm trying to find a way to compromise, but the school, they're just being hard,” J.T. said.

"I wanna make sure I make the right decisions for everybody.  I'm still in shock, actually,” J.T.’s mother, Christa Plante, reacted.

The family says they'll make a decision overnight and let school officials know Thursday.
