GENESEE COUNTY -- There has been a change to the method of scoring MEAP tests the make the score required to be considered "proficient" in each category higher.  A spokesperson for the Genesee Intermediate School District tells NBC25 that parents can expect to see scores dropping by as much as 45 to 65 points in some categories, but using adjusted scores the county is still improving across the board.

GISD spokesperson Jerry Johnson says, for example, a section of test that previously required 12 out of 20 to be considered "proficient" may not require 18 out of 20, a large difference.  He says the changes were made to make kids more ready for college and career ready performance.

Johnson says reading scores in Genesee County improved dramatically and actually still rose on average even with the "cut score" adjustment.
