High school dropout rate increases slightly

Tougher graduation requirements for Michigan's high school class of 2011 did not result in a sharp rise in the number of dropouts.The Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday that state statistics show a slight decline in graduation rates. But it didn't show a big increase in drop out rates.

The Class of 2011 was the first in Michigan to need more math,science and other classes to get a diploma.The state's Center for Educational Performance and Informationsays the Class of 2011's dropout rate was 11.13 percent, up from11.07 percent for the Class of 2010.
