MOUNT PLEASANT (AP) -- Detroit native, Central Michigan standout and ex-NBA All-Star Dan Roundfield has drowned off the Caribbean island of Aruba.

Police and his family say Roundfield and his wife were swimming off the southern tip of the island on Monday when they went beyond a protected reef area and got caught in rough water.

The 59-year-old Roundfield managed to get his wife to some rocks where she scrambled to safety but he was then swept away in the current.

The 6-foot-8 forward-center started his pro career with Indiana, then in the ABA. He played in the NBA for 11 seasons.

Besides the Pacers, he also had stints with Atlanta, Detroit and Washington.

Roundfield was selected as an All-Star in 1980, 1981 and 1982, when he was playing for the Hawks.
