Chime in now!
It began as an interview with a candidate on television, the kind of thing that happens everyday during campaign season.
However one senate candidate in Missouri would never forget this interview, and his answer on the topic of abortion in the case of rape has now turned into a nationwide controversy.
It all happened Sunday during an interview at a St. Louis television station when Missouri Republican Senate frontrunner Todd Akin, a sitting congressman, had this to say about abortion.
Q: What about in the case of rape - should it be legal or not?
AKIN: It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment. But the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."
Mitt Romney quickly called the National Review Online and said Akin's comments were insulting, inexcusable, frankly wrong and offensive.
Republicans are now joining forces in coordinated effort to force the rogue Tea Party candidate out of the Senate race, including presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who had this to say in response to Akin's comments:
"The thing he should consider is what's in the best interest of the things he believes in most deeply, what will help the country at this critical time," Romney told WWUR.
Also, Republican campaign chairman senator John Cornyn told Akin he'll pull the plug on millions of dollars of campaign funds if he stays in.
But Akin later told Sean Hannity's radio show he wont quit.
Democrats, led by the President, sought to take advantage.
"The views expressed were so offensive. Rape is rape. And th idea that we should be parsing out qualifying and slicing what types of rape we're talkinga bout doesn't make sense to the American people and it certainly doesn't make sense to me."
