Ilitch gives GM, Chrysler and Ford free advertising

DETROIT -- General Motors Fountain at Comerica Park now has signs supporting Ford and Chrysler.

The Big Three will stand tall inside the park throughout the 2009 season.

Jim Leyland referred to the uncertainty surrounding "The Big Three" in his first answer during pregame interviews on Thursday at Comerica park.

"The hooplah in the city is wonderful.  We certainly appreciate people coming out today.  We know times are tough," said Leyland, who is entering his fourth season as Tigers manager.

Justin Verlander wants him and his teammates to give downtrodden residents of Michigan something to cheer for this summer.

"I think this team has the ability to do something special for this city.  I think what Mr. Ilitch has done in centerfield representing 'The Big Three' shows a lot of what this team means and what we're trying to do here," says Verlander, who is trying to bounce back from a 17 loss season in 2008.
