Genesee County's finest hit the course this weekend in Burton
BURTON -- For the third consecutive year, IMA Brookwood Golf Course in Burton will be the battleground for Genesee County's finest amateur golfers.
Beginning Friday morning, the Genesee County Amateur Championship will take place, a 54-hole stroke play format which wraps up Sunday afternoon.
The tournament has expanded from three to four divisions this year: an open division for all golfers, a senior division, super-senior division, and a newly-added women's division.
Course officials say that the Brookwood Golf Club has never looked better, and they hope the same can be said for what looks to be a highly-competitive field.
"Last year's field was the strongest ever," said Joe Simpson, a PGA Tour Professional at IMA Brookwood. "Joey Stimick, player for Eastern Michigan University, won our tournament. Rich Burke was our Senior Champion, he's a two-time defending champion. But every year I see the level of players really get better and better. And so we're hoping this year we're gonna have the same type of field."
"We started getting ready for this tournament probably in April," added Course Superintendent Chris Allard. "Soon as we could start cutting grass, and started to do some procedures to speed up the greens. It's been an ongoing process all summer."
