Division 8 crown goes to Irish after 42-21 rout of Saugatuck
DETROIT — Bennett Myler and Matt Mills each scored a pair of touchdowns as Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart routed Saugatuck 42-21 in the Division 8 championship at Detroit's Ford Field.
Mills scored Friday on a 48-yard punt return early in the third quarter, meaning the game was played with a running clock until Saugatuck scored with 8:38 left to move the lead back under 35 points. Mills also set a championship-game record with a 74-yard punt.
Saugatuck (10-4) was within 14-7 midway through the second quarter, but the Fighting Irish (13-1) put the game away with three touchdowns in five minutes. Mills caught a 66-yard pass from Mitchell Myler, who then hit Ryan Grinzinger for a 33-yard score.
Bennett Myler finished the first-half scoring with a 1-yard run to make it 35-7.
