Hamady, Hemlock advance to semifinals

LINDEN -- Detroit Country Day's girls basketball team began the season ranked first in the state in Class B.

After a perfect regular season, and a run through the district and regional playoffs, it was no surprise that the Yellowjackets entered Tuesday night's quarterfinal versus Goodrich still ranked number one.

The Martians changed that, and shook up the Class B playoffs in the process, taking out Country Day 66-50.

Goodrich led 22-8 after the first quarter, and pretty much matched the Yellowjackets on offense the rest of the way.

The Martians advance to Friday's semifinals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, where they will face Dearborn Divine Child at 6 p.m.

Hemlock takes on Three Rivers at 7:50 p.m., in the other Class B semifinal.

The Huskies blew out Gladstone 63-34.

In Davison, Midland rallied from 13 points down to briefly go in front of Canton, but the Chiefs used a pair of late 'and ones' to hold off the Chemics 35-32.

"I couldn't be happier about the second 16 minutes of basketball. To come from down 13 in a quarterfinal, to take a one point lead, have it come down to a couple of plays, that's everything you hope for. This game somebody has to go home, neither of us wanted it to be us. Unfortunately we didn't get the bounces we needed to. My kids gave 100 percent in the 2nd half," said Midland head coach Elaine Mahabir.

Two-time defending state champion Hamady advanced to the Class C semifinals after a 51-47 victory over Pewamo-Westphalia.

Senior Porsha Fluker had 17 points, as the Hawks now face St. Ignace on Thursday afternoon, in a rematch of last year's Class C state title game.

In Class D, Bay City All Saints lost to Waterford Our Lady, 61-36.
