Buena Vista, Fulton-Middleton among other winners Wednesday night
AUBURN -- Junior Matt Costello recorded a triple-double 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 blocks and Bay City Western held off Clarkston 45-37 Wednesday night to capture the school's first ever regional title.
The Warriors led 18-17 at the half, before pushing the lead to eight in the fourth quarter. The Wolves rallied and cut the deficit to one, before Western pulled away for good.
Bay City Western advances to the state quarterfinals in Class A. They meet Orchard Lake St. Mary's Tuesday night at Davison High School.
In Class B, Flint Powers blew out Yale 78-45 to set-up another showdown with Detroit Country Day. Hemlock lost to Muskegon Heights 67-44, leaving the Chargers as Mid-Michigan's only Class B school still remaining.
At Reese High School, Buena Vista pulled away from New Haven in the third quarter and took out the Rockets 76-61 in a Class C regional final.
Knights' senior star George Goodman had 23 points, as B.V. moves on to face Detroit Consortium on Tuesday night.
"I know New Haven's got a great team. They knocked off a really good team in Nouvel. We knew we had a fight coming into tonight. My guys were ready. We had a hard practice yesterday, knowing what we had to do coming into tonight," said Buena Vista head coach Austin Brinkman after the win.
Also in Class C, Beecher toppled Hanover-Horton 58-48.
The Bucs draw Muskegon Western Michigan Christian at Mt. Pleasant High School in Tuesday's quarterfinals.
In Class D, Fulton-Middleton routed Muskegon Catholic Central 67-52 at Webberville High School. The Pirates take on Manistee Catholic Central on Tuesday at Hope College.
