Former Virginia Tech star is the Loons leading hitter
MIDLAND -- He's only been with the Great Lakes Loons for a small amount of time, but Steve Domecus's impact has been big. The second-year pro has a role and he knows that role. So far, he has been great at the plate and great behind it.
Domecus says: "I don't play every day. I split time with Michael Pericht, he is the other catcher. It is really important to stay mentally prepared for your games and when I am not playing, I will sit and watch how teams are pitching to our other hitters because for the most part, teams will stick to the same approach.
That watchful eye has helped his batter’s eye. Domecus is the only player on the roster with an average over .300.
"For me, I want to make sure that I do all the little things and help the team out. If there is a runner on third base with less than two outs, I just want to get that run in because, who knows, maybe that one run is going to be important."
What is most important to Domecus and his teammates is wins. The Loons still have work to do now for the postseason to happen later.
"We lost on the last day of the first half, which kept us out of the playoffs and it was kind of a letdown for us and we weren't too happy about that and I think that kind of affected us as a team for those first three games. We got swept by Lansing the first three games of the second half. We want to win the Midwest League Championship. We all came from Ogden (Utah) last year and we played in the Championship game, but we lost so that was a little frustrating and as a whole, we want to win that championship and we want to win that and play in the major leagues and keep bringing championships where ever we go."
