It was the final BMX race of the season at Richfield Park track Sunday
RICHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- It was the last race of the season at Richfield BMX park Sunday. The racers and their parents were giving it one more go.
"Did you just race?" NBC 25 asked of 6-year-old Savanna Isom of Columbiaville. "Yea," she said. "Well how did you do?" "Good," Isom replied.
"It's fun to race people and other people and fun to have a team named Dixie," 7-year-old Parker Woodell of Davison said.
From the youngest competitors to the oldest, these guys and gals said this sport has something special about it.
"It's the adrenaline," 18-year-old Kori Sinauskas said. "The rush you get when you're out on a track having a good time trying to win, there's nothing like it."
"I like to ride my bike," Chase Chase Kuzniar of Davison said. "It's fun watching other people and it's fun racing."
BMX has gained popularity recently since it became an Olympic sport in 2008. But out in Davison, they've been racing on this track for 30 years.
"It's under the radar a little bit," said Ryan Waring, a BMX rider and parent of 14-year-old expert rider Evan. "It's not promoted like other sports."
Racers are grouped by age and skill.
"If you're old enough to ride a bike, you can go out there and do it," Sinauskas said.
There are several motos, or races, to gain points. Then, there's a final race. Sometimes there's a prize in the final, like the $500 the expert group was enticed with Sunday.
"There are a bunch of races that start in January all over the country," Sinauskas said. "You go to as many races you want to earn points, then over Thanksgiving weekend there is a grand National Race.
Richfield will host a national race next summer, which is a big coup for a track totally unfunded and run by volunteers.
"We hosted 50 races this season including the state championships," Waring said of the track, that's one out of just 10 total in the state.
Waring said if you're interested in the sport, regardless of your age, the track is usually open and they have loaner bikes and helmets for you to use.
