Three players scored at least 14 points for Northwood
MIDLAND -- The Northwood University (MI) men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a dramatic 70-69 win over Northwood University (FL) Monday night (November 14).
The contest was the Second Annual President's Cup, pitting the two sister schools against each other. The Florida campus was victorious in the first meeting between the two schools a year ago.
The Seahawks led for the majority of the first half, but a fastbreak layup by the Timberwolves' Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich.) put the Michigan campus up 42-41 at halftime. The Michigan Campus out-rebounded the Florida Campus 25-8 in the opening half. The Seahawks' All-American guard Jonathan Dunn was the key player for the Florida Campus, pouring in 23 first-half points.
With 8:39 remaining in the contest, the Florida Campus led 60-53. But the Timberwolves scored seven straight points, setting up a dramatic finish. Neither team would lead by more than three points the rest of the way. The Seahawks rebounded a missed Timberwolf free throw with just over three seconds remaining trailing by one, but were unable to get off a shot.
For the game, the Timberwolves shot 44.8 percent (26-58), compared to 42.4 percent for the Seahawks (25-59). The Florida Campus hit 10 3-pointers, compared to nine for the Michigan Campus. Both teams made nine free throws. The Michigan Campus out-rebounded Florida 51-20), while the Florida Campus committed 14 fewer turnovers than Michigan (19-5). The Timberwolves' depth was also a key to the win, outscoring the Seahawks 32-5 in bench points.
Three Timberwolves scored at least 14 points in the game, led by Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich.) with 16. Andrew VanDierenDonck (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) and Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) each scored 14 points off the bench. Seven different Timberwolves grabbed at least four rebounds in the game.
Dunn led the way for the Seahawks, scoring 23 despite going scoreless in the second half. Noah Keeton added 18 points, while Partick Hortsmann finished with 17. Point guard Tyrone Davis had 11 assists and six steals.
The Timberwolves return to action Friday (November 18) at the Wisconsin-Parkside Classic. Northwood will open play with a neutral site matchup against Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m.
