Ithaca beat Constantine Friday at Ford Field to win their second state title
DETROIT -- For the second time in as many years, the Ithaca Yellowjackets are state champions. They beat Constantine Friday at Ford Field in the Division Six Final.
Down 14-7 in the second quarter, Sophomore QB Travis Smith passed to Jared Evers, who shook off some defenders to tie the game at 14. That is how both teams went into halftime.
In the third quarter, Smith kept the ball, and went 20 yards for the end zone. That puts Ithaca in the lead at 21-14 and they never looked back. In fact, the Yellowjackets scored four touchdowns in the second half to beat the Falcons 42-14 for their 28th straight win.
Coach Terry Hessbrook said the second is just as nice.
"It's amazing," Hessbrook said. "I truly can't put it into words. I know that it's awful sweet and these kids had this goal since last year when we sat at this table."
"I think it was almost a little jealousy of the seniors last year, being able to do that and being able to go out on top," Running Back Garret Miniard said. "I think that drove us and kept us going in the off-season. And throughout the season, to want to have that luxury being able to go out on top just like they did."
