Costello is the first-ever from Bay County to win honor

DETROIT -- Bay City Western's Matt Costello was named Michigan's Mr. Basketball for 2012.

Costello beat out Lansing Sexton's Denzel Valentine, earning 2,053 points to Valentine's 1,746. He joins a short list of six Mid-Michigan winners, including himself.

He is the first player to ever win from Bay County.

In his acceptance speech and after, Costello said that his parents have meant everything to him and that they're a big reason he won the award.

"My mom fed me and kept me under control," Costello said. "Dad taught me how to play basketball. Without them, none of this would be possible."

Jennifer Costello, Matt's mother, said the final results didn't matter.

"Regardless of  if he won, we were always proud of what he's accomplished," she said.

"He's been blessed with some size and coordination," said Mike Costello, Matt's dad. "But just to persevere, to work hard, to continue being a teammate--these are the things I'm most proud of."

Costello will attend Michigan State in the fall where he'll play ball for the Spartans.
