LONDON (AP) -- Danell Leyva shook off an early miscue to rally for the bronze in the men's gymnastics all-around on Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old from Miami was 17th following the first rotation. He flubbed his dismount on pommel horse, but roared back behind thrilling sets on parallel bars and high bar.

Leyva posted the highest scores of the night on both events, earning the first U.S. medal in the men's all-around since Paul Hamm grabbed gold in Athens eight years ago.

Leyva, whose mother fled Cuba for the U.S. when he was an infant, said his medal was redemption following a disappointing fifth-place finish by Team USA in the team final on Monday.

American teammate John Orozco fell off the pommel horse early and finished eighth.
