MT PLEASANT -- This was what was supposed to happen: MSU coming to CMU for the first time ever and winning big.
The Spartans dominated on both sides of the ball as 65 players got into the game.
"We wanted to come in here and play up. No matter who we play, just play up," MSU head coach Mark Dantonio said.
At the very least, the Spartan defense played at the same high level they did last week, still not allowing an offensive touchdown.
MSU defensive lineman William Gholston said there's always room for improvement.
"Until that scoreboard says 0-0-0-0, then we can always improve," he said.
Dantonio wanted to see his quarterback Andrew Maxwell find his comfort level as well as his receivers, which he did.
Maxwell threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns. It didn't hurt that the Midland native's family was in attendance.
"It was a great atmosphere everyone was excited about the atmosphere," he said.
CMU head coach Dan Enos said his squad was disappointed with the score but thrilled to have had the opportunity.
"It was great for the State of Michigan to keep the money here, to keep all the business here. I think it was a really neat thing," Enos said.
Dantonio says this was a nice test for his team as they now prepare to welcome Notre Dame to East Lansing next week.
