MIDLAND -- Michigan State is not the only 2-0 team in Michigan.
NCAA Division II Northwood (2-0, 1-0 in GLIAC) is playing their best football since 2009, the last time the Timberwolves were 2-0. This week, they head to Ohio to play Notre Dame College in a GLIAC contest.
Besides playing Notre Dame on Saturday, both the Spartans and Timberwolves have stout defenses. Northwood has only allowed their opponents to complete 42 percent of their passes.
The defense, with seven seniors starting on the depth chart, has compiled 16 tackles for loss and six sacks - compared to eight and three a year ago, respectively.
On special teams, they have kick returner Cameron Jackson and punt returner Eric Williams who are the only teammates in NCAA Division II to rank in the top ten for return yardage.
Head coach Mike Sullivan believes his team is seeing results because of hard work, experience and commitment all year.
"Our team is more physical but that comes with playing with each other," Sullivan said of his improved defense and special teams. "Football is a 12-month sport at this level."
